If you happen to have seen my earlier post on panic attacks, you’ll know that I mentioned trying Hypnotherapy as a way to get to the root of them and try to break out of the cycle.
I only had a few sessions but found it really helpful for me, so thought it might be useful to share my top tips and how that experience worked for me, as I often get asked what it was like.
I can also confirm that NO, it didn’t involve hopping around the room like a bunny or making chicken noises!
What is Hypno good for?
Hypnotherapy can be used for a huge range of things, and is often something people try if they’ve had a long-term issue or habit which they’re finding hard to break on their own. Such as:
- Weight loss
- Quitting smoking
But it can also help to relieve the following bodily issues too:
- Skin conditions
- IBS / bowel issues
Is it guaranteed to work?
No, is the short answer – there isn’t enough medical research to substantiate the benefits of Hypno, but that doesn’t mean it can’t work for you if you’re willing to give it a go. The mind is a very powerful thing. Just ensure you go with someone who is fully qualified, usually these people are registered with the UKCP or CNHC.
Things to note if you’re thinking about Hypno:
- Be open-minded to the concept that Hypno could help you – once you’re open to the process and willing to go in freely and experiment with your feelings you stand a much greater chance of allowing the therapy to help you
- It’s a two-way street, the therapist can only get to the root of the problem if you’re willing to open up and talk
- Relax – if you’re tense it will be harder to get into the necessary mental state
- It will probably take a series of sessions, so be prepared to save some pennies for a course of treatment if you’re serious about committing to it
- Don’t be surprised if it makes you upset to begin with – it’s designed to reach the part of your subconscious which perhaps you’ve buried for painful reasons, but facing it will ultimately be what makes you feel like the weight has been lifted
- Liking your therapist – if you don’t feel a connection or synergy with your therapist or for whatever reason they make you feel uncomfortable don’t feel guilty about trying someone new – this is a very personal experience and needs to be the right fit
What was my experience of Hypno like?
I was fortunate to know a specially trained therapist prior to having Hypno and was already seeing her for treatments like angel cards and indian head massage, which definitely helped me to feel comfortable about having this treatment.
The sessions began with me lying down on a bed and allowing myself to be put into a deep sense of relaxation. This was done by a technique which centres you in a place you feel totally relaxed such as a beach, meadow, forest or whichever you choose (usually somewhere you know or have been). The therapist then ‘counted me down’ from 10-1 to put me into a deeper state of relaxation, and ensured I was fully relaxed in every area of my body before the session really began.
She then began to ask me questions about how certain people, places and times in my life have made me feel, going further into my past experiences and emotions – I was aware of all the questions she was asking at the time, and my answers came from somewhere in my subconscious. Sometimes when you’re not grasping for an answer it just comes from somewhere, hard to explain but it seemed to flow quite easily for me once I got going.
There was also a part of the session where the therapist asked me to visualise myself at the age when my issues first began, and to embrace that child/person and tell them everything was going to be ok. I was then asked to picture a big red balloon and to blow it up with all my negative experiences, before releasing it into the air and watching it float away. Which might sound like a load of twaddle to some people and I was skeptical too, but it really did help.
The session ended with me being brought back into the present and taken slowly out of that relaxed state. Counting back up from 1-10 to end the session.
What does being ‘under’ feel like?
As I say, I wasn’t ‘out of it’ – I knew exactly where I was and what I was doing/saying. That being said, I did find that once I was fully into the session I had an odd sensation that my body was being turned. It was as if the bed I was lying on was slowly being rotated, like a very slow-moving merry-go-round. This initially really weirded me out and I wanted to open my eyes to make it stop, but I went with it and allowed the sensation to continue and it was fine after I got used to it.
